Descendants of John Freeman
Birth*Colonel Phineas Freeman was born on 1 April 1752 at Preston, New London County, Connecticut, (the birth was recorded at New London.)5
Birth-note The Brewster Genealogy shows that Phineas Freeman born 7 Jan 1748 was the son of Deacon Joseph and Anna Rockwell. It says that he married Martha Morrison about 1784.
However: The will of Joseph (Deacon) in 1780, in which he appears to list all of his living children, does not include Phineas. As thorough as he was being, he surely would have mentioned a prior settlement on Phineas if such had been made.
Also: The will of John Rockwell (Anna Rockwell's father) dated 11 Dec 1753 names the children of Anna (Rockwell) Freeman as Joseph and Ebenezer. Therefore, the Phineas b 1747/8 to Deacon Joseph & Anna Rockwell must have died before the age of 6.
The Phineas who married Martha Morrison is the son of Benjamin (the above Joseph's younger brother) and Abigail Tracy.
Marriage BannThe marriage intentions for Colonel Phineas Freeman and Martha Morrison was dated on 23 March 1780 at Colrain, Franklin County, Massachusetts.7,8,9
Marriage*Colonel Phineas Freeman married Martha Morrison, daughter of Captain John Morrison and Ann Thompson, in 1780.10,11,2
MarriageAnother source says Colonel Phineas Freeman married Martha Morrison, daughter of Captain John Morrison and Ann Thompson, circa 1784 at Fort Ann, Washington County, New York, (This is from the Brewster Genealogy and is probably based on the author's estimates on the children's birth and where the family was known to have lived. A record of the first five children's birth has been found in Vermont (the earliest in 1781). This makes the earlier marriage date the more likely).1
Death*Colonel Phineas Freeman died on 3 October 1797 in his 46 year.12,13,14,15,4
Burial*He was buried at Kingsbury Cemetery, Kingsbury, Washington County, New York, (plot 9 row JJ.)12,13,14,15,4
Death-note The DAR and Brewster Genealogy both show Phineas' death in Nov. These dates are proved incorrect by his gravestone and the Letters of Administration granted to his widow 14 Oct 1797.
Grave*The gravestone at Kingsbury Cemetery, Kingsbury, Washington County, New York, reads:
     In Memory of
     Col Phineas Freeman
     Who died October
     3rd 1797 in the 46th
     Year of His Age
There was a Revolutionary War marker at his grave site.12,4
Grave* Rush Freeman's stone was broken and was laid in front of Phineas Freeman's gravestone.16
